Notes on the conversion factors
Each category works from a factor table: every unit is recorded as a multiplier against a fixed base for that category. The converter first scales your value back to the base, then divides by the target unit’s factor, so any two units in a category convert consistently.
Length is based on the metre and includes kilometres, centimetres, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles. Weight is based on the kilogram with milligrams, grams, tonnes, ounces and pounds. Area uses the square metre with hectares, square kilometres and acres, and volume uses the cubic metre with millilitres, litres, gallons and cubic feet.
Storage follows the computer convention of 1024 (1 KB = 1024 B, up to PB), which differs from the 1000-based figures drive makers print on the box - that gap is exactly why a 1 TB drive shows roughly 931 GB in your OS.
The base category is handled separately: choose the source base, type the digits, and the page shows binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal at once, warning you if a character is illegal for the chosen base. Very small or very large numbers are shown in scientific notation to keep precision.
All conversions happen in your browser; the numbers you enter never leave this device.
Frequently asked questions
Is storage based on 1000 or 1024?
The storage category uses the computer convention of 1024 (1 KB = 1024 B, up to PB), which is why a drive sold as 1 TB shows about 931 GB in your operating system.
How accurate are the conversions?
Every unit is stored as a factor against a fixed base, so conversions are exact to the precision shown; very large or very small results switch to scientific notation.
Do I need an internet connection?
The maths runs in your browser with no server calls, so conversions keep working offline once the page has loaded.
Is my input uploaded?
No. Values are converted on your device and never sent anywhere.
